Bechterew’s disease
Morbus Bechterew is a chronic rheumatic disease. The disease cannot be cured, but can be brought under control in most cases.
What is Morbus Bechterew?
Morbus Bechterew (ankylosing spondylitis) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease in which the rheumatic inflammation affects, among other areas, the vertebrae of the spine.
In addition to the spine, the sternum and pelvis may also be affected. Morbus Bechterew can cause pain and stiffness in the lower back, reducing the natural lumbar curve and increasing the curvature of the thoracic spine.
The presentation of Morbus Bechterew varies, and the symptoms can be more or less burdensome.
What are the symptoms of Bechterew’s?
- Pain and stiffness in the lower back, pelvis and chest are typical symptoms
Patients with Morbus Bechterew experience recurrent pain and stiffness in the lower back over a period that can last several years – possibly accompanied by radiating pain to the legs and groin.
The chest may be stiff and tender, and there may be tenderness at one or more sites where tendons attach to the bones.
