Muscle Strain

Muscle strains are very common and often occur in connection with sports activities. Strains of muscle fibres can also be seen in other situations where the muscle is overloaded. The older you get, the more you increase your risk of developing a muscle strain.

When a muscle is overstretched, one or more fibres inside the muscle can rupture. This is called a muscle strain. If the entire muscle is torn, it is called a muscle rupture, which is a rarity.

Symptoms

When the injury occurs, you will immediately experience pain. You will usually not be able to complete the activity you are engaged in. Athletes are rarely in doubt about what has happened. If you frequently experience muscle strains, you should be seen by a sports medicine doctor.

Treatment

The treatment is rest for a period. You can cool with ice. A compression bandage can also help. Medication (NSAID) will also have a good effect.
