Most people know someone who snores – or snore themselves.
Snoring is often associated with poor sleep quality and can cause stress, both for those around you and for yourself
What are the typical causes of snoring?
- Poor space in the throat due to large tonsils, a low-hanging palate and an enlarged uvula
- Poor air passage in the nose due to a deviated nasal septum
- Poor air passage in the nose due to swollen nasal mucosa as a result of allergy
A combination of the above factors may be the case.
Finally, overweight can have a negative impact on breathing during sleep due to increased fat deposits in the throat.
Symptoms of snoring
Noisy and possibly irregular breathing during sleep. This can lead to reduced quality of night sleep, and you may experience being tired during the day. Noise disturbance from snoring can also affect those around you.
Examination
Before treating snoring, one must always rule out serious sleep disorders, such as severe sleep apnoea, where breathing pauses occur in connection with snoring.
Therefore, CPH Privathospital collaborates with the sleep medicine clinic ScanSleep in Copenhagen regarding the investigation of snoring patients. ScanSleep’s experts perform a thorough recording of your snoring and breathing during sleep.
When the result of the examination is available, the surgeon decides in consultation with the specialists from ScanSleep which treatment is most suitable in your case.
Treatment
Uncomplicated snoring, that is snoring without significant breathing pauses (apnoeas), can in many cases be treated with an operation. During the preliminary examination, both your nose and throat are examined to assess where the narrow area is.
If poor space in the pharynx is the main problem, we can offer a snoring operation. At CPH Privathospital we use the surgical technique Coblation, which is also used for removal of tonsils.
The operation is performed under a microscope. With this technique it is possible to remove the tissue using soft radio waves while the surrounding tissue is cooled with saline. This results in significantly less bleeding during the operation and less pain when you wake up.
During the operation, tissue in the pharynx is removed to create more space. In some cases, trimming of the palate area and reduction of the uvula as well as possible removal of the tonsils will be required. How much tissue is to be removed is agreed before the operation.
If you suffer from sleep apnoea and your pharynx is normally structured, the best treatment is often a CPAP mask, an apnoea splint or bite guard instead of a snoring operation.
