Ankle stabilisation surgery
If the ankle is unstable and there have been multiple sprains, the cartilage in the ankle joint can become damaged. It may therefore be necessary to undergo ankle stabilisation surgery.
Damage to the cartilage in the ankle joint can be caused by malalignment of the joint due to too many sprains, cartilage injuries or osteoarthritis.
Symptoms
The main symptom is pain when the ankle joint is loaded, as well as swelling. Mobility is often reduced and swelling is common after greater exertion.
Treatment
CPH Privathospital’s surgeons have extensive experience with ankle stabilisation surgery. During the operation, the ankle joint is examined arthroscopically if necessary to assess any cartilage or bone damage. The ligaments that are lax are stabilised individually according to the degree of instability in each patient, thereby eliminating any malalignment of the ankle.
The patient is placed in a splint for 3 weeks, and for a further 3 weeks with firm taping. The ankle is then trained with a physiotherapist for 2–3 months.
