About the urinary tract
The urinary tract can be affected by a wide range of diseases, from cases of cystitis, flank pain or urinary symptoms to more serious cancers.

Diseases of the urinary tract are most often managed by the surgical speciality of urology, and kidney diseases predominantly by the medical speciality of nephrology.

Urinary tract infection and mildly reduced kidney function can often be treated by your own doctor, but in more complicated conditions there is a need for examinations and treatments performed by a consultant, including diseases of the prostate.

Cystitis in men

Bladder stones most often form as a result of poor bladder emptying. The volume of urine that is constantly in the bladder causes minerals and waste products to crystallise and bladder stones develop. Bladder emptying difficulties are a typical problem for older men, and therefore bladder stones occur most frequently in men (90%).

Symptoms of bladder stones

The typical symptoms, which are also seen with enlarged prostate, may be caused by bladder stones or by outflow problems:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Sudden cessation of the urinary stream
  • Tenderness radiating into the urethra
  • Frequent urination
  • Nocturnal urination
  • Weak stream
  • Bladder emptying difficulties, use of abdominal pressure
  • Post-void dribbling, possibly leakage/incontinence
  • Urgent need to urinate

Examination and treatment

We offer examinations to identify the cause of bladder stone formation. The examinations include completion of a fluid and voiding diary, a voiding test with measurement of residual urine in the bladder by ultrasound, possibly ultrasound examination of the prostate, possibly cystoscopy of the bladder, and possibly X-ray examination. In addition, possibly urodynamic examination.

The treatment is surgical, either through the urethra with crushing of stones or by an open procedure if there is a large stone or several large stones. Prostate surgery may be performed at the same time.
