About the urinary tract
The urinary tract can be affected by a wide range of diseases, from cases of cystitis, pain in the flanks or urinary symptoms to more serious cancers.

Diseases of the urinary tract are usually managed by the surgical urological speciality, and kidney diseases predominantly by the medical nephrological speciality.

Urinary tract infection and mildly reduced kidney function can often be treated by your own doctor, but in more complicated conditions there is a need for examinations and treatments performed by a specialist, including diseases of the prostate.

Blood in the urine

The kidneys filter waste products from the blood and convert them into urine. Urine is transported from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder, and during urination urine is passed via the urethra. Blood in the urine can therefore originate from the entire urinary system

What is blood in the urine?

Blood in the urine – or haematuria – should as a general rule be investigated further, but is not necessarily an indication of serious disease. A distinction is made between:

  • Macroscopic haematuria, which is visible blood in the urine during one, several or all urinations.
  • Microscopic haematuria, which is invisible blood in the urine detected by either microscopy of the urine or chemical examination (urine dipstick)

Symptoms of blood in the urine

Symptoms of blood in the urine vary from none to pain in the flanks or over the bladder to urinary problems.

What are the typical causes of blood in the urine?

Haematuria can occur in:

  • Incidental finding without underlying disease
  • Intense prolonged physical activity
  • Kidney or bladder stones
  • Medical kidney diseases
  • Cystitis or urinary tract infection
  • Benign enlargement of the prostate
  • Polyp diseases and cancer of the kidney or urinary tract

Examination and treatment

We offer examinations with a view to identifying an underlying cause. The examinations include endoscopic examination of the bladder (cystoscopy) and X-ray examination. Treatment always depends on the cause.
