Ankle stabilisation surgery

Cartilage injuries in the knee most often occur due to prolonged wear, overloading of the knee or acute twisting or impact to the knee. At CPH Privathospital we are specialists in cartilage injuries and our orthopaedic surgeons are ready to help you.

What is a cartilage injury?

A cartilage injury occurs if the knee is subjected to wear or acute injury over a prolonged period. The cartilage can thereby become damaged and bursae in the knee can subsequently become irritated – which leads to swelling and persistent pain. In osteoarthritis of the knee, a so-called arthroscopy can be performed to assess the damage.

Symptoms of cartilage injury

It can be a sign of cartilage injury if you experience

  • Swelling and reduced mobility in the knee
  • Pain in the knee during activity and when you sleep

Examination of cartilage injuries in the knee

Through a clinical examination of the knee, your medical history and an X-ray, the orthopaedic surgeon can make a relatively certain diagnosis, but often an ultrasound scan and/or MRI scan will be necessary.

Treatment of cartilage injuries in the knee

Based on your symptoms, our surgeons will assess whether surgery (arthroscopy) may be considered.

During the operation, the method that is best for repairing your cartilage injury will be assessed. The cartilage is not removed, as it is an important part of the bones’ protection against wear.

It is also possible that your cartilage is so worn that a new knee (a knee prosthesis) may be considered.
