What is a neck cyst?

A neck cyst is a localised sac-like fluid collection that develops in a cavity in the neck that was already formed during foetal development. Cysts can lie dormant for many years and yet spontaneously begin to grow. A neck cyst can be located on the side of the neck or in the front midline of the neck.

Symptoms of neck cyst

Spontaneously occurring swelling at a localised site on the neck, which in many cases is not tender. The swelling, which can vary in size, only causes pressure discomfort when the cyst reaches a certain size.

Examination

A clinical examination of the neck and an ultrasound scan with fine-needle aspiration are usually sufficient to establish the diagnosis.

Treatment

As a starting point, an attempt is made to drain the cyst with a needle through the skin, but there is a risk that it will recur after some time. A neck cyst can, once present, grow and press on the neck and can lead to inflammation. Therefore, operation is often necessary. 
 
We offer this operation, where under general anaesthesia the cyst is removed from the outside via the skin. This requires one night’s admission. There are normally no significant discomforts associated with the operation.
