Loose abdominal skin / abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
The aim of the operation is to flatten and shape the abdominal area by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the muscles. The result is a flatter, healthier abdomen that suits your body type. It is often possible to go down several clothing sizes.
Surgery for loose abdominal skin can generally be divided into three types: mini, standard and extended. Which type suits you depends on your body and your genes.
Mini-abdominoplasty
Mini-abdominoplasty is the least extensive of the three operations and can sometimes be performed under local anaesthesia. Here the skin is only tightened on the lower part of the abdomen. This operation is therefore suitable for you if you only have loose skin on the abdomen below the navel level.
Abdominoplasty
In an abdominoplasty, the skin is tightened on both the upper and lower part of the abdomen. This operation is suitable for you if you have loose skin on the abdomen both above and below the navel level.
Abdominoplasty with tightening of the abdominal muscles
Abdominoplasty with tightening of the abdominal muscles is ideal for you if you have loose skin both above and below the navel level as well as a bulging of the abdominal muscles. This is most often seen in women where the abdominal muscles have separated during pregnancy or in people who have undergone major weight loss.
It is common to combine abdominoplasty with liposuction of localised fat deposits in order to further shape the body.
