Podagra – uric acid gout

Podagra manifests as tenderness, swelling and pain in a single or a few joints

What is podagra?

Podagra manifests as acute gouty arthritis in one or more joints. It most commonly occurs in the big toe, but other joints can also be affected.

Symptoms

The symptoms typically appear as sudden and severe attacks. You may experience that the symptoms can develop within a few hours; you will feel pain, tenderness, swelling and redness. You may also develop fever.

Treatment

Medication can prevent and stop attacks. We also look at whether changes in your lifestyle can make a difference.
To prevent permanent joint damage and possible complications, the medical treatment of podagra is lifelong.

Treatment of acute podagra

In the event of an acute attack of podagra, the first priority is to provide pain relief and stop the attack.  Treatment may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Corticosteroids
  • Cold therapy
  • Analgesics
  • Rest and offloading
