Polyps in children

Polyps in children are benign lymphoid tissue located in the nasopharynx that help strengthen the immune system. In certain cases, polyps in children can grow large and block the nasopharynx, which can lead to breathing problems, heavy snoring and sleep apnoea in children.

Symptoms of polyps in children

  • Heavy snoring and sleep apnoea
  • Chronic cold and nasal congestion
  • Ear problems and recurrent infections

Before the decision about an operation, you/your child will attend a preliminary examination with one of our consultant ear, nose and throat surgeons.

The consultant examines you/your child in the ears, nose and throat and provides information about treatment options.

In the case of an operation for nasal polyps, simultaneous insertion of grommets in the eardrums and possibly removal of tonsils may be considered. This is agreed and planned at the preliminary examination.

Operation for polyps in children

At CPH Privathospital we offer gentle treatment of polyps in children. In cases where the polyps are sufficiently enlarged, an operation may be necessary to remove them. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, and the child can often be discharged the same day.

After the operation

After the operation, the child may experience mild pain and tenderness in the nasopharynx for a few days, but breathing will quickly be markedly improved. A follow-up is carried out approximately two weeks after the operation to ensure that healing is progressing as expected.
