About the urinary tract
The urinary tract can be affected by a wide range of diseases, from cases of cystitis, pain in the flanks or urinary symptoms to more serious cancers.

Diseases of the urinary tract are most often managed by the surgical urological speciality, and kidney diseases predominantly by the medical nephrological speciality.

Urinary tract infection and mildly reduced kidney function can often be treated by your own doctor, but in more complicated conditions there is a need for examinations and treatments carried out by a consultant, including diseases of the prostate.

Urinary problems

Approximately 400,000 adult citizens in Denmark have problems with urinary incontinence, two to three times more women than men. Approximately 200,000 men in Denmark have potentially treatment-requiring urinary symptoms. In all departments/all specialities we see patients with urinary problems that require intervention and possibly investigation.

What are urinary problems?

Urinary difficulties in men and in women can have several causes. Symptoms are divided into either voiding problems or storage problems. Collectively, the complaints are termed LUTS (= lower urinary tract symptoms).

Symptoms of urinary problems

  • Voiding symptoms can be: Hesitancy, weak stream, difficulty emptying the bladder, interrupted urination, need to strain/push, post-void dribbling, burning or pain on urination and acute urinary retention
  • Storage symptoms – originating from the urinary bladder – can be:

Sudden and strong urge to urinate (urgency), involuntary urination (incontinence), frequent urination (pollakiuria), small urine volumes, nocturnal urination (nocturia), and possibly pain on bladder filling.

Common causes of urinary problems

Urinary problems occur more frequently with increasing age and can be due to several causes. In addition, gender-specific variations are seen:

  • Enlarged prostate and prostate cancer (men only)
  • Overactive bladder (most commonly women)
  • Narrowing of the bladder neck or urethra (rarely women)
  • Bladder infections and interstitial cystitis (most commonly women)
  • Diabetes or neurological disease (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, etc.)
  • Bladder cancer and “radiation cystitis”

Examination and treatment

We offer examination to clarify the cause. The examinations include completion of a fluid and voiding diary, a voiding test with measurement of residual urine in the bladder by ultrasound, ultrasound examination of the prostate (in men), possibly cystoscopy, and possibly X-ray examination. In addition, possibly urodynamic examination.

The treatment depends on the cause.
