Medical weight loss for moderate to severe overweight

Perhaps you have tried all kinds of diets and generally done a great deal to lose weight – yet the needle on the bathroom scale refuses to move? CPH Privathospital offers medical weight loss.

The body will do everything to preserve its fat mass, which is why losing weight is complex. Fortunately, help is available, as it is now possible to influence the substance that regulates your appetite with medical weight loss treatment.

What is overweight and what are its consequences?

Overweight and obesity are conditions in which the body’s fat stores are so large that they have health consequences. If your BMI (weight/height2) is 30 or above, you suffer from obesity, which can have major consequences for your life, with an increased risk of secondary diseases.

The risk of developing, among other things, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, certain forms of cancer and reduced fertility increases significantly with an elevated BMI. In addition, being overweight also affects your physical and mental health.

Frequently asked questions about weight loss
Weight loss often comes with a range of questions and uncertainties, which is completely natural. We have therefore asked our doctor Jason Joe Baker to answer the frequently asked questions. Find them here!

How Wegovy® works

Wegovy® is an EU-approved medicine for the treatment of adults with:

  • severe overweight (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or
  • starting BMI 27-30 kg/m² as well as at least one weight-related secondary disease, e.g. diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, or obstructive sleep apnoea.

Wegovy® is a so-called GLP1 agonist. It is a naturally occurring hormone produced in the small intestine. After a meal, the hormone is released when the food reaches the small intestine. The hormone is then transported with the blood to the brain, where it tells us that we are full and do not feel like eating.

When treated with Wegovy®, the substance is given in a larger quantity, whereby the mechanism of action is amplified. This means that you will not feel any particular hunger while being treated with the medicine.

It is important that you still maintain a healthy and varied diet both during and after the treatment. Especially once the weight loss has been achieved – and when you stop taking the medicine – you may find that you regain weight if you do not stick to the good eating habits.

The most common side effects

The most frequent side effects come from the gastrointestinal tract and classically last about 3-4 weeks – sometimes shorter and sometimes longer. You may experience side effects such as constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.

As many people develop constipation, it can be a good idea to take e.g. 1 gram of magnesia daily (over the counter) from the very first day of treatment, and to continue for as long as necessary.

How it is done

You start by booking a preliminary examination with our consultant, where you will together find out whether Wegovy® is the right treatment for you. For both the preliminary examination and the subsequent check-ups, our doctor will take plenty of time to talk with you about your wishes and expectations as well as how the medicine is to be taken and how it works. If you have questions after your visit, you are always welcome to contact us.

Wegovy® is self-administered by injection. Wegovy® is to be injected once weekly into the subcutaneous fat tissue, and the dose is increased as needed, but at the earliest every 4 weeks, over a period of minimum 16 weeks.

The medicine should be taken at approximately the same time each occasion. If you forget to take your weekly dose, you should take it as soon as possible and within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, the missed dose is skipped, and the next dose is taken on the scheduled weekday.

Follow-up consultations
After about 3 months, you will be called in for a physical check-up (10 min) with subsequent weighing. This is to ensure continued indication (there must be a minimum 5% weight loss).

Subsequently, there will be telephone check-ups at 7 and 11 months.

Please be aware that we are obliged to hold the follow-up consultations pursuant to the Danish Patient Safety Authority.
