Frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder is typically seen in people aged 40–60, more frequently in women than men. The cause is often unknown, except in cases where there is joint effusion or a fracture of the shoulder

What is frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a condition of the shoulder joint capsule that causes restricted movement and pain in the shoulder region. The joint capsule slowly shrinks and cannot produce synovial fluid. The condition can occur spontaneously or as a result of an injury or complication following surgery.

Symptoms of frozen shoulder

  • Pain and restricted movement
  • Stiffness of the shoulder with decreasing pain

Treatment of frozen shoulder

In the vast majority of cases, frozen shoulder can be treated without surgery. Treatment consists of pain-relieving medication, corticosteroid injections into the shoulder joint, limitation of physical activities at work and during leisure time for an extended period. The course is often prolonged, but there are good results without surgery.

After a prolonged course, the patient will often experience permanently reduced mobility, and this is regardless of whether you have surgery or not. When you are pain-free, you can begin training.
