Trapped nerve in the elbow

Do you have tingling sensations in your hand, fingers and elbow? Pain, clumsiness and reduced sensation may indicate that you have a trapped nerve in your elbow.

The ulnar nerve (elbow nerve) is one of the three main nerves in the arm/hand. It controls the movement of certain muscles in the forearm and hand, and also provides sensation to the little finger and half of the ring finger, as well as the part of the hand opposite these fingers, both in the palm and on the back of the hand.

If irritation or swelling of the ulnar nerve occurs, it can become trapped.

What are the symptoms of a trapped nerve?

If you have a trapped nerve in your elbow, you will often experience:

  • Tingling sensations in the elbow, hand and fingers
  • Clumsiness
  • Pain
  • Reduced sensation in the little finger and part of the ring finger

Examination

Through a clinical examination of the elbow and your medical history, the orthopaedic surgeon can make a relatively confident diagnosis, but an ultrasound scan will often be necessary. A nerve conduction study may also be required.

How is a trapped nerve in the elbow treated?

If the condition is prolonged for more than three to six months, the nerve can be surgically released so that it is no longer trapped. This operation is usually very effective.
