As a patient, you are guaranteed a number of rights when encountering the healthcare system. These rights cover everything from patient counselling, access to information and maximum waiting times to subsidies for services, complaints procedures and compensation. There are many rules in the Danish healthcare system – get an overview of your rights here.
In connection with free and extended free choice of hospital for patients, you can find an overview of rules and rights on sundhed.dk if you:
- Have been referred for a diagnostic examination and/or treatment at a public hospital
- Have had your operation postponed or cancelled
- Have been referred for psychiatric examination and/or treatment

Help us learn if something goes wrong?
Every day – all year round, many people come into contact with the Danish healthcare system. In the vast majority of these visits, things go well, but sometimes errors and adverse events unfortunately occur. It is important for us to be able to learn from these and avoid them in the future, which is why you as a patient or relative have the opportunity to report adverse events to the Danish Patient Safety Database (DPSD). Compensation
All patients are covered by a public compensation scheme. The scheme also covers you if you are injured in connection with treatment at a private hospital. It is the Patient Compensation Agency’s task to ensure that patients receive the compensation they are entitled to under the law. You can read more on the Patient Compensation Agency’s website.
