Do you have pain around the coccyx? Perhaps you experience pain every time you sit down on a chair? These can be symptoms of, for example, dislocations or fractures in the coccyx itself. Many people prefer to use a cushion or sit at an angle when they have coccyx pain.

The pain can vary from day to day, and you can experience both localised, sharp pain, but it can also be diffuse. For example, you may have pain in your pelvic floor, in your lower abdomen, sacrum and lower back. Some will in rare cases also experience pain during bowel movements and physical activity. If you press directly on the coccyx, you may feel tenderness. The same applies to ligaments and muscles that are located around the coccyx.

Do you recognise these symptoms of coccyx pain? Then it is important that you get a professional examination and possible treatment. The small bone has an important function for both your balance and posture. Several of the pelvic floor’s important muscles are located here, and the lower part of the spinal cord’s extension is attached to the coccyx. If you have previously had cancer and get bone pain that lasts more than two weeks, you should also see a doctor.

Do you have pain in your coccyx? This is why it occurs.

In some cases it is difficult to find a cause for the pain around and in the coccyx itself. But often the explanation is a hard fall and osteoarthritis, but also pain after incorrect twists, childbirth and poor working positions can cause coccyx pain.

  • If the coccyx receives an impact, or you fall backwards and hit it
  • There is continuous pressure directly on the coccyx
  • A difficult pregnancy or childbirth, where the coccyx can become sprained

Coccyx pain can, however, also occur completely spontaneously, just as the cause can be due to inflammation in the spine, inflammation or local, pathological conditions, for example in the rectum. In extremely rare cases, the pain can be due to a tumour.

Getting coccyx pain can occur at all ages, and women experience it more often than men. This is because the coccyx protrudes more in women, and therefore women’s coccyx is more exposed.
