COPD

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is the most common lung disease and is most often caused by tobacco smoking.

The disease cannot be cured, but with smoking cessation, physical activity and the right medication, you can achieve a much better life and slow the progression of the disease.

What is COPD?

In COPD, there is a gradual destruction of the lung tissue, and it is often combined with coughing and mucus production.

Why do people develop COPD?

Tobacco smoking is often the main cause of developing COPD, but COPD can also occur in people who have never smoked. Tobacco smoking triggers a chronic inflammatory condition in the bronchi and lungs. This leads to a loss of function of the bronchial mucosa and lung capacity.

Did you know that…
40 years of age, but most people are 50–70 years old when the diagnosis is made. However, the disease is insidious, and one may have been ill for many years before the diagnosis of COPD is made.

Symptoms of COPD?

The most characteristic feature of COPD is shortness of breath on exertion. Those who suffer from severe COPD will experience shortness of breath even with the slightest exertion. COPD patients are at particular risk of respiratory infections, and in the event of acute exacerbation, this requires hospital admission. We recommend that all COPD patients receive influenza vaccination to reduce the risk of pneumonia. Read more about the symptoms of COPD here.

How is COPD examined and treated?

As mentioned, the disease cannot be cured, as the damaged lung tissue cannot be recovered. It is therefore very important that the disease is detected in time so that it can be slowed.
