The incidence of enlarged prostate increases with age, with symptoms seen in 25% of men aged 50-60 years, and approximately 50% in those over 60 years

What is enlarged prostate?

The prostate gland is located just below the bladder, through which the urethra passes.  Throughout life, and as long as the gland is stimulated by the male sex hormone, the prostate grows and is responsible for the production of seminal fluid, which at ejaculation is mixed with sperm cells produced in the testicles. The growth causes compression of the urethra, and thereby drainage problems arise causing urinary symptoms. The condition is also called benign prostatic hyperplasia, abbreviated BPH.

Symptoms of enlarged prostate

• Frequent urination
• Nocturnal urination
• Weak stream
• Difficulty emptying the bladder, use of abdominal straining
• Post-void dribbling, possibly leakage/incontinence
• Urgent need to urinate
• Cystitis, possibly recurrent
• Risk of complete inability to pass urine. Painful condition requiring acute relief with catheter

Examination and treatment

We offer examinations to identify the cause of urinary complaints. The examinations include completion of a fluid and voiding diary, a voiding test with measurement of residual urine in the bladder by ultrasound, ultrasound examination of the prostate, possibly cystoscopy of the bladder, and possibly X-ray examination. In addition, possibly urodynamic examination.

Treatment ranges from counselling (bladder training), medical treatment, or surgical treatment for prostate problems.
