Enlarged turbinates
At CPH Privathospital we offer specialised treatment of enlarged turbinates (turbinate hypertrophy) in the nose. The turbinates are bony projections in the nose, covered by mucous membrane, which help to warm, humidify and filter the air when you breathe. With enlarged turbinates, the mucous membrane can swell and block the airway, which can lead to reduced sense of smell, snoring and poor sleep quality. Often enlarged turbinates are related to nasal allergy or a deviated nasal septum.
Symptoms of enlarged turbinates
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Reduced sense of smell
- Snoring and poor night sleep
- Recurrent sinus problems
Treatment options
The first step in the treatment of enlarged turbinates is often medication, such as nasal spray. If this does not provide sufficient effect, an operation may become necessary.
Operation for enlarged turbinates
At CPH Privathospital we offer a gentle operation, where the mucous membrane on the turbinates is reduced using a technique called coblation, which uses local heat. This improves the airway and significantly reduces the symptoms. The operation lasts approximately 20 minutes, and you can expect to be discharged the same day.
In case of mucosal swelling in the nose and sinuses, it will often be advisable to have temporary corticosteroid treatment in connection with the operation.
Expectations after the operation
After the operation you will experience increased airway in the nose within a few weeks. Slight tenderness and swelling in the nose are normal for the first few days. We recommend pain-relieving medication and daily nasal rinsing with saline to promote healing.
