About the penis
In men, the urethra runs through the penis. The urethra is longer than in women, and surrounding the urethra in men are the erectile tissues, which enable erection by filling with blood.
The length of the urethra provides good protection against, for example, urinary tract infections, which is why such infections are more common in women.

Diseases of the penis can occur in all parts of the penis corresponding to the urethra, the erectile tissues or the skin. Most diseases are benign, but cancer of the penis or urethra does occur, albeit very rarely.

Erectile dysfunction

The most common cause of erectile dysfunction is poor circulation to the penis. Poor circulation and atherosclerosis come with age and from lifestyle factors (smoking and alcohol). Previously, the condition was called impotence, understood as powerlessness, but it is not necessary to feel powerless. There are measures that can be taken.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction can be relative (reduced potency) or absolute (impotence). Difficulty maintaining an erection is a problem that increases with age.

Did you know that…
5% of 40-year-old men, 10% of 50-year-olds, and up to 25% of men over 65 have erectile problems?

What are the typical causes of erectile dysfunction?

In addition to age, there are several other causes of the problem:

  • Psychological factors
  • Hormonal factors
  • Problems with blood circulation
  • Reduced nerve function or concurrent neurological disease
  • Side effect of medication

Often, several causes coincide and not just a single cause.

Examination and treatment

We offer examination, possibly with X-ray examination, and treatment. The treatment options are many, and only rarely is there an indication for surgery.
