Breast reduction

All men have a small breast gland structure.
In the vast majority of men this does not cause problems, but for various reasons this small gland structure can become stimulated and begin to grow. This can be corrected with an operation and/or liposuction.

All men have a small breast gland structure. Some men will experience that the gland structure begins to grow and there can be various reasons for this. In most men no cause is found for the increased breast gland development. During puberty the production of hormones is high and transient breast development can be seen, which usually disappears on its own. In some men, however, the breast development is permanent and an operation may be appropriate.

In connection with overweight or large weight fluctuations, hormonal influence is seen which can stimulate the glandular tissue to grow and cause so-called male breasts. After significant weight loss, sagging breasts can also occur. Another and more serious cause can also be the use of anabolic steroids, euphoric substances or medication, which can disrupt the hormonal balance, stimulating the glandular tissue to grow.

Finally, in very rare cases it can be due to hormone-producing nodules in the testicles. Therefore your own doctor should perform an examination of hormones in the blood and a clinical examination of the testicles before any operation.

Expectations

The breast gland development must be of a certain extent before we can recommend an operation. Surgery for male breast development can generally be divided into three types, which vary in extent and thus address different groups.

  • Liposuction
  • Combined liposuction and open surgery
  • Open surgery and removal of excess skin

The result of cosmetic surgery is not permanent. The body’s natural ageing continues and will change the result over time.

It is important to remember that the operation is associated with a certain risk of complications and that the final result cannot always live up to your and the plastic surgeon’s expectations and wishes.

If you are very overweight/underweight, there is an increased risk of complications with anaesthesia and wound healing. If your BMI (Body Mass Index) is over 30, it is therefore not certain that we can offer you an operation if you are to have general anaesthesia.
