What is trigger finger?

Trigger finger is caused by irritation and swelling of the flexor tendon to one of the fingers. You will experience that the tendon gets stuck in the tendon sheath with the finger in a bent position. We also call this condition a trigger finger, as if it were on a trigger. You will have difficulty straightening the finger, but with the help of the other hand the finger can be released. This typically happens with a small snap or click, hence the name trigger finger.  
The cause of trigger finger is not known, but overload or pressure on the tendon can trigger the symptoms. 

Treatment of trigger finger

First-line treatment typically involves a corticosteroid injection, which helps in more than > 50% of cases.  

You should rest the finger in a straight position for 1–2 weeks in combination with anti-inflammatory medication, which relieves the irritation.  

If medical treatment is not effective, it will be necessary to perform an operation.
