Acromioclavicular joint resection

What is acromioclavicular joint resection? Which symptoms should you be aware of and how is it treated? We provide the answer on this page.

What is acromioclavicular joint resection?

The acromioclavicular joint is a small joint between the collarbone and the shoulder blade. With age, this joint will become worn, and it can cause pain. In cases of prolonged shoulder pain, it may therefore become necessary to resect the acromioclavicular joint, a so-called AC resection.

Symptoms of acromioclavicular joint impingement

  • Sensation of instability between the collarbone and shoulder blade
  • Prolonged pain in the shoulder

Examination

Through a clinical examination of the shoulder and your medical history, the orthopaedic surgeon can make a relatively certain diagnosis, but supplementary medical imaging examination will often be necessary.

Treatment

The symptoms can be relieved by an operation in which the surgeon will restore stability between the collarbone and shoulder blade. The operation is performed using arthroscopic technique and in rare cases with open surgical technique. A 6–7 cm incision is made over the outermost part of the collarbone, after which the outermost part of the collarbone is removed. A new ligament connection is then created between the collarbone and shoulder blade.
