About the scrotum
The male scrotum is also called the scrotum. The two testicles are located in the scrotum and these produce sperm cells. During ejaculation, the sperm cells pass through the epididymis via the vas deferens to the prostate and are mixed with fluid from the seminal vesicles, which provides optimal conditions for the sperm cells. In addition, the testicles produce the male sex hormone testosterone.

Diseases of the testicles or surrounding tissue are very common and benign, while malignant conditions occur in the testicle itself, but rarely in the scrotum outside the testicles, although cancer of the penis or urethra is seen, albeit very rarely.

Varicocele

A varicocele is also called a varicocele. It is a collection of twisted, dilated blood vessels at the upper part of the testicle. It feels a bit like a collection of “earthworms”. Varicocele is harmless and is almost always found only on the left side.

What is a varicocele?

A varicocele is a dilation of the draining blood vessels (veins) from the testicles. The condition resembles varicose veins in the legs, where one of the causes can be poorly functioning venous valves. Varicocele can occur on both sides, but predominantly on the left side (85 %).

Who gets a varicocele?

Varicocele occurs in 10-20 % of adult men, and is usually completely harmless.

Symptoms of varicocele

  • Often none
  • Feeling of heaviness and tenderness
  • Swelling of blood vessels in the scrotum, which decreases after rest in a lying position
  • Can lead to reduced sperm quality

Examination and treatment of varicocele

We offer examination, possibly ultrasound scanning or CT scanning.

If surgical treatment is needed, this is performed using an operating microscope under general anaesthesia.
