Throat

The throat is an extremely sensitive area. Every time you swallow, you use and feel your throat. Breathing and coughing manifest themselves via the throat, and the voice is also located in the inner area of the throat.

If you experience discomfort in the throat, voice problems, throat pain or mucosal changes in the throat, pharynx or oral cavity and these do not resolve quickly on their own, you should be examined in the pharynx and throat by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

About the throat

In the posterior part of the oral cavity, the uvula and the palatine arches are visible. The tonsils consist of lymphoid tissue and are located in the palatine arches.

The throat (pharynx) extends from the posterior part of the nose and mouth down to the trachea and oesophagus.

When we breathe, air passes through the throat to and from the lungs.

When we swallow, food is moved from the oral cavity, via the pharynx and down into the oesophagus.

At the same time, the epiglottis closes off the trachea.

At the bottom of the throat, air passes into the larynx.

The vocal cords open during inhalation and exhalation and tighten when sounds and speech are to be produced.

Throat pain can be common in connection with discomfort or disease in the throat, and it can be due to many different causes – some may require treatment and others may not.
