Nasal congestion

Nasal congestion can be very troublesome and can cause heaviness in the head, poor sleep at night, fatigue and shortness of breath during physical activity.

At CPH Privathospital we see many people with nasal congestion – and in the vast majority of cases, fortunately, something can be done about it.

The most common causes can be a cold or other infection in the nose, or it may be due to allergy, possibly with polyps in the nose. But there may also be a deviation inside the nose or a sore in the nose as the cause of poor air passage in the nose.

If you have symptoms for more than 3 weeks, you should have your nose examined by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Typical causes of nasal congestion

The most common causes can be a cold or other infection in the nose, or it may be due to allergy, possibly with polyps in the nose. There may also be a deviation inside the nose or a sore in the nose as the cause of poor air passage in the nose. If the symptoms persist for longer than 3 weeks, you should have your nose examined by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Symptoms of nasal congestion

  • Poor air passage in the nose
  • Crusts in the nose
  • Sores in the nose
  • Runny nose
  • Dryness in the throat due to nasal congestion
  • Snoring due to nasal congestion
  • Reduced sense of smell

Examination

We offer you a consultation in our ear, nose and throat (ENT) outpatient clinic with a review of your symptoms and an examination of your ears, nose and throat. Your nose will be examined with a fibreoptic scope, and if a CT scan of your nose is necessary, we can also offer that. If it is necessary to take a sample of the nasal mucosa, this is also offered.

Treatment

Based on your symptoms and the conclusion of the examination, we will advise you on what can be done.  This may involve medical treatment with prescription nasal spray, antibiotic treatment or possibly surgery to restore the airway in your nose.

Same doctor and rapid treatment

Whether the symptoms have arisen acutely or are of a long-standing nature, you should be seen by a consultant (specialist doctor) in ear, nose and throat (ENT). Our consultants are ready to help you, so you can quickly receive the correct diagnosis, whether you are a private patient, have health insurance or come through the public waiting time guarantee.

All examinations can take place at CPH Privathospital, and you therefore have the same experienced consultant throughout the entire pathway.
