About the penis
In men, the urethra runs through the penis. The urethra is longer than in women, and surrounding the male urethra are the erectile bodies, which enable erection by filling with blood.
The length of the urethra provides good protection against, for example, urinary tract infections, which is why such infections are more common in women.

Diseases of the penis can occur in all parts of the penis corresponding to the urethra, the erectile bodies or the skin. Most diseases are benign, but cancer of the penis or urethra does occur, albeit very rarely.

Congenital curvature is rare and occurs in approximately 1 %. Peyronie’s disease occurs in up to 9 %. The incidence increases with age.

What is penile curvature?

Penile curvature is seen during erection and can cause cosmetic and functional problems. Because of the curvature, the condition is also colloquially called “bent penis”, and can be congenital or acquired. The acquired condition is also called Peyronie’s disease – or Induratio penis plastica – which is an inflammatory condition that occurs in the capsule of the erectile bodies.

Symptoms

Symptoms of penile curvature, which are either only seen or are worst during erection:

  • In congenital conditions, there are often cosmetic complaints, but with severe curvature, intercourse can be impaired
  • Peyronie’s disease can cause a tender plaque-like nodule in the capsule of the erectile body
  • Penile curvature can be so severe that intercourse is impaired
  • Hourglass configuration
  • Erectile dysfunction
