About the scrotum
The male scrotum is also called the scrotum. The two testicles are located in the scrotum and these produce sperm cells. During ejaculation, the sperm cells pass through the epididymis via the vas deferens to the prostate and are mixed with fluid from the seminal vesicles, which provides optimal conditions for the sperm cells. In addition, the testicles produce the male sex hormone testosterone.

Diseases of the testicles or surrounding tissue are very common and benign, while malignant conditions occur in the testicle itself, but rarely in the scrotum outside the testicles. However, cancer of the penis or urethra is seen, albeit very rarely.

Hydrocele

A hydrocele feels like a smooth and round, “rubber ball-like” lump in the place of the testicle. It is not dangerous and there is rarely direct pain, but in some cases they can become so large that they can cause pain and swelling in the scrotum.

What is a hydrocele?

Under normal conditions, there is a small amount of fluid in the membranes around the testicle. A hydrocele is a condition with increased fluid volume causing discomfort. The cause of a hydrocele may be following a previous infection, but is most often unknown.

Hydrocele can occur at all ages. However, it is most commonly seen in young boys and older men

Symptoms of hydrocele

  • Increased fullness in the scrotum
  • Discomfort, but rarely pain
  • Can cause problems with urination in case of severe swelling
