Acromioclavicular joint dislocation – separated shoulder
In a fall on the shoulder, you can be so unlucky as to sustain an acromioclavicular joint dislocation. This is a common shoulder injury in cyclists, motocross riders and skiers, etc.
What happens is that 1-3 ligaments are torn and the collarbone moves upward in relation to the shoulder blade. The injury usually looks quite severe.
Symptoms
In acromioclavicular joint dislocation, the following are seen
- Visible deformity – the collarbone will protrude upward
- Swelling
- Reduced mobility and instability
- Severe pain
Treatment
The vast majority of acromioclavicular joint dislocations are treated conservatively, that is, without surgery. Most cases are managed in the emergency department, where you receive an arm sling for 2-3 weeks followed by a rehabilitation programme. After 6-12 months, all symptoms should have resolved. However, you may find that your collarbone will remain elevated in the joint.
Some people, however, continue to have symptoms in the form of pain and instability, and in this case surgery will be considered. During the operation, the acromioclavicular joint is repositioned with a screw.
