Arthroscopy of the knee, also called an arthroscopy, is the most commonly used orthopaedic surgical procedure. Using a straight scope with optical fibres, a screen image of the joint seen from the inside can be obtained via small incision channels in the knee. Using instrument channels, it is possible to operate inside the knee, where, for example, parts of a damaged meniscus can be removed or cartilage damage can be smoothed.

In some cases, it will not be possible for the consultant to make a correct diagnosis, despite medical imaging examinations having been performed, and it will therefore be necessary to perform an arthroscopy of the knee. During the arthroscopy, the consultant can see whether ligaments, joint capsule and cartilage are damaged. If damage is found, it is repaired in the same session.

How is the operation performed?

When the consultant has made a diagnosis based on a clinical examination and possibly medical imaging, you will be booked for an arthroscopic operation on the knee.

During an arthroscopic operation on the knee, the surgeon will make 3-5 small holes around the knee, so there is room for both the arthroscope and instruments.

The arthroscopic method is used especially for

  • Meniscus injuries in the knee
  • Cartilage damage in the knee
  • Loose bodies in the knee
  • Cruciate ligament injury
  • Debridement of the knee

Arthroscopic surgery is a very safe method and the most commonly used. Our orthopaedic surgeons all have extensive experience in arthroscopic surgery.
