The summer holidays are approaching, but do you
know the three sun safety tips?

The risk of melanoma increases with the number of sunburns and the amount of UV radiation you are exposed to throughout your life – from both natural sunlight and tanning beds. In Denmark, there are approximately 2,500 new cases of melanoma each year – and only about 10% are due to hereditary factors. You can therefore do a great deal yourself to reduce your risk by avoiding sunburn and protecting yourself and your children in the sun when the UV index is 3 or above.

Here are the three sun safety tips:

  • Shade: Find shade in the middle of the day, when the sun’s UV radiation is strongest. Half of the UV radiation occurs between 12-15.
  • Sun hat and clothing: If you cannot stay in the shade, a sun hat with a wide brim and a long-sleeved t-shirt provide the best protection against the sun’s UV radiation.
  • Sunscreen: Use a minimum of factor 15 in Denmark and factor 30 in countries where the sun is stronger.

Did you know that:
9 out of 10 cases of melanoma can be avoided with sensible behaviour in the sun
